Remembering...we must never forget

Good Day Dear Friends,

“And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your Kingdom!” (Luke 23:42 NASB)

September 11th is a day we remember. In fact, with the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, not only does one nation remember, but on 9/11 the world remembers a horrifying event that will stand in infamy. We remember the innocent victims, we remember the children who in an instant of terror lost mothers and fathers, we remember the heroes who lived to serve another day and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to help their fellow man, we remember all those who have put on a uniform to serve and protect, and we remember the enemies who plotted and carried out such a heinous crime against humanity. Yes, today we remember. As we recall where we were and what we were doing at that tragic moment six years ago, here are some thoughts to include as we do our remembering.

The Holy Bible is a massive collection of God breathed Words, which He uttered for posterity, through numerous servants, over the span of some fifteen centuries, and has carefully protected throughout the ages, for what purpose? So that, we, mankind could learn and remember His Word; thus it is a Book of remembrance. Today’s Bibles consist of thousands of pages, many thousands of verses, and many, many thousands of Words. Yet, despite a Book devoted by God that we may remember Him, we find very few places where the Words “remember me” are found. Even if we take into account all the various translations, there are only about thirty places where those two Words “remember me” are found. And for all but a few exceptions, we find these Words coming from the Lord’s people crying out for Him to remember them. The patriarch Joseph was in prison and after revealing the secrets of the chief butler’s dream, he bids the butler to “remember me” and in so doing invokes God’s remembrance. (Genesis 40:14) Samson asks the Almighty to “remember me” one last time in retaliation against his enemies. (Judges 16:28) Desperate for a son, Hannah begs the Lord to look upon His maidservant and “remember me.” (1Samuel 1) And a number of the Lord’s other great servants, like Nehemiah, Job, David and Jeremiah, beseeched the Lord to “remember me.”

There are actually only three places in the OT, where the Lord pleads for His people to consider Him in remembrance with those Words, as Isaiah, Ezekiel and Zechariah reveal God Almighty’s heart aching for His people to just “remember Me.” Then, we discover in the New Testament, a New Covenant, a time when the Almighty Himself has come and revealed Heaven’s Glory to the world that we may be Saved. While, in the NT there are a couple times the apostle Paul asks the Church to remember him, there are only two outstanding instances where these important Words are given. One is our part, spoken by one who represents every one of us- the prayer of the pleading sinner on the cross in our opening verse. The other place is God’s part, where we find some of the most important Words in all of Scripture. God Himself urging us to do what we must in our every thought, our every word and our every deed, to remember Him. “He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then He broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, ‘This is My Body, which is given for you. Do this to remember Me.’ After supper He took another cup of wine and said, ‘This cup is the New Covenant between God and His people—an agreement confirmed with My Blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.” (Luke 22:19-20 NLT)

So today, as we remember that horrifying day six years ago when the world stood still for a tragic moment in time, let’s not forget that God is still in control. And that the battle against evil has already been won by the One Who conquered death, the very same Mighty One Who implores us to be His for Eternity, with two simple Words… “remember ME.”

Praise, Honor and Glory to our Triumphant King Jesus!

AMEN

Tom
